Renting a Car: When Is It Really Economical?

Author: Travelbug  //  Category: Transport

car-rentalOne of the best ways to travel is using a rental car as it allows you the freedom to move freely without being hindered by the restrictions of using public transportation.

Renting a car ensures that you get to places on time and provides you with reliability. Rental companies maintain their vehicles, so when you rent a car you know it has been serviced. This will allow you to explore the foreign country or unfamiliar territory without having to worry if your car will get you from place to place without breaking down.

If you should begin to have trouble with your rental car, all you need to do is pick up a telephone and call the company. They will either come and service the vehicle where it breaks down or replace it for you. Either way there is no extra cost incurred.

By renting a car, you can be guaranteed to find a suitable one for your travelling needs. Whether you require a larger car for cargo and passengers, an all terrain vehicle for some adventurous rides, a fuel efficient mode of transportation, an automatic or a manual, the choice is yours when renting a vehicle. You can choose your type of vehicle that you think is most suitable.

Furthermore, renting a car will allow you to travel to the countryside where no public buses or trains can traverse. It is also a wise option to take if you are going up on a mountain or to the beaches in the outskirts of the city.  It is also much less expensive and more flexible than taking a cab. You can also choose to stop over at unplanned destinations a tea break or to check out tourist attractions along the way.  I usually rent a car when I explore places away from the city in Australia such as the Great Ocean Road in Victoria or the lovely coastal town bearing basalt rocks Kiama in New South Wales. It is cheaper to take a weekend package or to rent for a few days in the weekeday.

Even if you are travelling to several places in the city for a few days and its outskirts especially with a family of four or more, renting a car is a better option for not only it is more economical but also safe and convenient. It gets you to your places of interests faster. Ask for a car with a GPS installed so you won’t have to put up with the hassle of depending on conventional maps.

When travelling on a long trip you will be putting a lot of mileage, along with wear and tear on your vehicle. In many cases you will even be required to have the car serviced
once you return home. This can all be avoided by going with a rental vehicle instead of driving your own car.

Car Rental Tips

Author: Travelbug  //  Category: Transport

If you need to rent a car on your next holiday trip, think twice. Do you need to travel into the country far from the city and have a list of places of interest to visit? If your answer is a yes, then renting a car is a sound option. Many travellers have the assumption that car rental rates are all about the same, and that shopping is a waste of time. You may be surprised that rates do vary, sometimes by quite a bit, between companies and destinations. Just check several car rental companies on the net and you will see what I mean. It pays to know the hidden costs involved and to avoid paying unnecessarily to rent a car for your holiday trip.

The tips below will help you to save costs on your next holiday trip abroad:

1) Surf the Net. As is the case with many purchases, you’ll usually find the best rates on the Internet. Renting online will afford you the luxury of seeing what rates look like on any vehicle you intend to rent. Also, many companies offer special discounts to people who rent online. Rates will obviously vary from company to company, depending on vehicle availability, location and other factors.

2) Go for weekday rates. Weekday rates are cheaper as less people tend to rent cars for holidays on weekdays. If you intend to rent a vehicle for several, go for weekly special rates as they tend to be cheaper than daily rates.

3) Beware of hidden fees and extras. Refuel charges: Typically, renters have two choices when it comes to fuel: You can pay for a full tank of petrol in advance or you can opt to refuel it yourself when you collect the car. Unless you plan on using the entire tank of petrol, prepaying will cause you to pay for more fuel than you actually consume especially if you rent the car just for a day.

Tax charges: Also, you can typically expect to pay 10-15% (or more) in taxes when you rent a car.

Loss and damage waiver (LDW): Rental agencies always push their loss and damage waiver on you when you’re signing up. This option typically provides you with zero-deductible coverage for any sort of loss or damage to the rental vehicle. Unfortunately, it comes at a price — usually $20-$30/day or more.

Individual car insurance almost always covers rentals. Moreover, many credit cards provide car rental insurance if you pay for your rental with the card.

Drop-off charges: If you pick up at one location and return at another, you might be subject to a drop-off fee, even if the other location is just down the road. This isn’t always the case, though, so check at the rental counter.

Mileage limits: In many cases, car rental agencies limit you to a certain number of miles per day (usually around 150). Exceed this limit and you can expect to pay $0.25-$0.50 for each additional mile.

Upsizing: Last but not least, it’s not uncommon for a rental agency to run out of small sized cars. In such cases, the standard practice is to upgrade you to a larger vehicle. The bigger cars get worse mileage, and you might find yourself spending far more on gas than you have anticipated.

 4) Airport rentals are best avoided. It’s often very convenient to rent a car at the airport, but keep in mind that you’ll pay for the privilege. If you’re on a business trip, many times you can rent a car from your downtown hotel. If you can conveniently arrange a hotel shuttle or public transportation from airport to front desk, you’ll save money taking delivery off the airport grounds.

5) Decline the insurance. Companies make big profits from insurance fees. It is very likely, however, that your auto insurance policy at home covers rentals as well. Call your agent to verify it.

Also check with your credit card company to see if using the card to pay for a rental provides collision coverage.

6) Book early. Rates depend on how many vehicles the company has on the lot at the time the rental is made, so sooner is better. Reserve your car at least a week in advance.

7) Avoid renting child safety seats. If you’re taking your child on board, you can save some dollars by bringing your own child safety seat. Rental companies can charge almost $10 per day for child safety seat rental.

As you can see, it pays to take some time to compare prices online. Call up the rental company to clarify any doubts so that you will not get misled by sales gimmicks online. Decide on the best deals and be mindful of the tips mentioned above in order to avoid unnecessary spending.

Transport Budgeting Tips

Author: Travelbug  //  Category: Transport

travelling by carThe cost of travelling from one place to another is one of the major aspects of a vacation budget. It is important to budget for this important expense, and to consider some options, in order to make your travel dollars stretch as far as possible.

To get around especially to places away from the city, you will need a rented car. Thus, it is important to choose the most economical and fuel efficient car that meets your needs.

Obviously, the size of your family will impact the choice of rental car, but compact and even subcompact cars can be great for motoring around cities, particularly when you need to park in tight parking spots.

In addition, a smaller car will get better petrol mileage, which is no small consideration, especially if you plan to do a lot of daily driving. And if you plan to travel away from the city, it may be important to choose a rental deal that provides unlimited miles, since charges for exceeding mileage limits can be quite costly. When it comes to the decision of whether to accept or decline the optional collision coverage on a rental car, always be sure to see if you are already covered elsewhere. For instance, your auto insurance company in your country may already provide insurance coverage for rental cars in your home country or elsewhere, as may your credit card company or travel insurance coverage. If you are covered by these policies, there is no need to accept the costly collision insurance offered by the rental car company.

And of course you will always want to top off your rental car with petrol before dropping it off, as refueling charges by rental car companies generally quite high.

An alternative to hiring a car is to depend on the public transport if you intend to just tour the city area.

In many cities public transportation can be a far less costly, and far more convenient, alternative to paying to drive and to park a rental car.  Take advantage of one day ticket or tourist deals if there are any as this is a cheaper option than paying separately for each journey you make on the same day. Some cities offer bundle ticket offers which is also cost-effective.

Of course public transportation does not make sense in every location.

Many small towns and even some larger cities have public transportation systems that are infrequent, inefficient, inconvenient or even nonexistent. In other locations, however, using public transportation makes a lot of sense. In Melbourne, for instance, visitors can buy a day pass that can be used on the trams and buses countless number of times within a day. Public transportation frees the tourist from the hassles and expense of parking the rental car. Many cities charge exorbitant rates for parking especially on weekdays so this is an area you can save on if you choose to take the public transport.

Getting around using public transportation is not difficult. Many public transportation companies, particularly those located in major tourist destinations, publish guides which give the route numbers to popular destinations, and bus drivers and train conductors in these locations are helpful on guiding tourists to their destinations. Also, check the public transportation websites of the country or city you intend to visit for bus and train schedules which you can print before your arrival.  Another way is to check with the staff at the ticket counter the printed train and bus schedules to your places of destination.

Keep in mind that expenses for travelling from one local destination to another can be cut down if proper planning and enquiry is made beforehand.
